KANGAWA: Residents Stops SGR Work in Protest

Residents of Kangawa in Oloolua Ward whose land has been affected by the SGR, last night forced the construction work at the Ngong Station to stop.  The residents are demanding to be compensated for their land.

Our reporter spoke to one of the affected resident who said they were promised full payment a few months ago but nothing has come to pass.  Some residents who consented for the early entry were paid between Ksh30,000 -Ksh200,000 to vacate their land and their houses demolished as they await payment. The money was to be used for renting accommodation until they were fully paid.  One of those who was paid to vacate and rent told our reporter, she took the money because she was confident of receiving full compensation within one month. Unfortunately, one month has turned into months and the rental money she was paid is finished.

Other residents claimed they had reserved parcels of land to buy, but the delay in compensation has caused them to incur interests and other late payment charges.

Lack of regular updates from the relevant authorities has created an opportunity for speculations, leaving the residents concerned they may loose their land or get minimal compensation if the project is completed before they are compensated. NLC Chairman Dr Swazuri guaranteed those affected they will be paid fully at current market value.

The residents promised to stop the project until they are fully compensated.
